Bones aired its seventh episode of the season, earning a 2.0 rating and 7.11 million viewers, up on last week by 0.1 of a ratings point and 150,000 viewers on what I think was one of the better episodes in a long time.

here is the official info from Nielsen via TVBYTN

1/10 of a ratings point in the 18-49 demo is equal to .1265Million viewers (or 126,500 viewers)

1/10 of a ratings point in the 25-54 demo is equal to .1187Million viewers (or 118,700 viewers)

1/10 of a ratings point in the Household is equal to .1142Million viewers (or 114,200 viewers)

So the math works like this..

Bones 2.0 in demo is equal to 2.530M viewers within the demo.

At 8PM there were approximately 39.64M people between the ages of 18-49 watching TV of which Bones' share of that Audience is 6%.

Of the 7.11M viewers only 2.530M were in the demo. The rest were either too old or too young for a Total of 4.58M.

I wonder how the magic 18-49 demo was determined? They really need to revamp the Nielsen ratings.

I agree... The 18-49 makes no sense. It is a relic of the 1960's and 70's that was created by advertisers and networks as the ideal group to pursuit when there were only 3 networks that reached 90 of the audience.

With Market fragmentation (i.e. the growth of Cable and alternative means of watching), Networks are pursuing a branding strategy that caters to a specific target market... Thus Networks (and shows) should be judged on how well it is reaching its target market.

A show like Bones (or any other crime/drama type show) caters to a specific segment of the population. This segment is not define by age but by common interests and experiences. Hence a show like Bones should be judged on how well it performs with those viewers.

The was I look at it, the majority of people who watch Jersey Shore will not watch Bones. The majority of people who watch Deadliest Catch will not watch Bones. So why are we lumping Bones in a viewer pool with such shows...

Just thought I share the Bones ratings info for A25-54 (2.4) and A18-34 (1.7)

Each rating point in A18-34 represents 1.187 Million people or 118,700 for each tenth of a point

A25-54 2.4 (or 2.4 * 1.187 yields 2.8488M or 2,848,800)

Each rating point in A18-34 represents 676,600 people or 67600 for each tenth of a point

A18-34 1.7 (or 1.7 * .676 yields 1.1492M or 1,149,200)
